River-Related Environmental Organizations

American River Conservancy is a grassroots nonprofit organization whose mission is to protect and enhance natural habitats where biodiversity can flourish; and to promote, through environmental education, a broad ethic of stewardship, assuring healthy ecosystems now and for future generations.

American River Watershed Group is a consortium of governmental agencies, environmental groups, and interested individuals who are working towards integrated resource management to preserve the special characteristics of this magnificent resource.

American River Natural History Association (ARNHA) is founded on the premise that open space and contact with the natural world benefit the community and are essential to our quality of life. We endeavor to promote understanding of Sacramento's outdoor world and the complex relationships of people, plants and animals in our environment.

American River Parkway Foundation exists to support the preservation, maintenance, enhancement and appreciation for the natural resources of the American River Parkway

American Rivers Founded in 1973, American Rivers mission is to preserve and restore America's river systems and to foster a river stewardship ethic.

American Whitewater Affiliation The mission of the American Whitewater Affiliation is to conserve and restore America's whitewater resources and to enhance opportunities to enjoy them safely.

California League of Conservation Voters is the nation's largest and oldest state political action committee for the environment. Founded in 1972, the League mobilizes California voters to support environmentally responsible candidates and issues, and serves as a watchdog to hold elected officials accountable to the environmental agenda.

California Trout The mission of California Trout is to protect, preserve, and restore wild trout, native steelhead, and their waters in California and to provide high quality angling adventures for the public to enjoy.

California Wild Heritage Campaign The goal of the California Wild Heritage Campaign is to protect California's remaining publicly owned wild lands and rivers.

Carmel River Watershed Conservancy The primary mission of the Carmel River Watershed Conservancy (CRWC) is protection of the natural resources (including threatened species of steelhead and California red-legged frogs) that form the Carmel River Watershed.

Clearwater Hudson River Sloop conducts environmental education, advocacy programs and celebrations to protect the Hudson River, its tributaries and related bodies of water, and to create awareness of the estuary?s complex relationship with the coastal zone.

Coastal Watershed Council The Coastal Watershed Council works to preserve and protect coastal watersheds through community stewardship education and monitoring.

Committee for Green Foothills (CGF) is a community-based organization that advocates the protection and preservation of environmental integrity in the San Francisco Bay Area. For over 30 years, CGF has been influencing land-use decisions and policy making in order to protect and preserve scenic resources, wildlife habitat, watersheds, riparian corridors, and wetlands.

Friends of the Kings River was formed in 1973 in opposition to the proposed Dinkey Creek Hydroelectric Project, and believes the river should be protected in its present state.

Environmental Defense Fund works in teams to find solutions to environmental problems. From water to wildlife, from toxic chemicals to tropical rainforests, EDF chooses the important areas where people can make a difference in defending the environment.

Environmental Water Caucus was formed in 1991 to facilitate the involvement of environmental, civic, recreational, and commercial fishing organizations in achieving sustainable water management solutions for California.

European Rivers Network The aim of ERN and RiverNet is to interconnect all forces working for living rivers and to provide world-wide information on river-basins, ecological projects on rivers organisations (especially NGOs) working on rivers.

Foothill Conservancy Works on Mokelumne River issues. Newsletters with Moke articles are on site as text files.

For the Sake of the Salmon assists watershed groups throughout Washington, Oregon, and California with the development of their technical and organizational capacity through the FSOS website, electronic newsletter, and workshops.

Friends of the South Fork Kings River is a non-profit association with a mission to conserve and preserve the natural resources in the South Fork Kings River watershed.

Hydropower Reform Coalition Founded in 1992, the Coalition is a consortium of national, state, and local conservation and recreation organizations working to reform national hydropower policies and to achieve improvements to rivers altered by hydropower dams.

International Association for Environmental Hydrology (IAEH) is a worldwide association of professional environmental hydrologists. IAEH was founded to meet the needs of the professional environmental hydrologist, in particular those working in the area of environmental cleanup, restoration, and pollution prevention.

International Rivers (IRN) works to halt the construction of destructive river development projects and to promote sound river management options worldwide.

National Organization for Rivers: NOR seeks to clarify public rights on rivers, address public and private land usage along rivers, conserve the land along rivers, and keep enough water in rivers to keep them healthy and usable for navigation and fishing.

National Wildlife Federation The mission of the National Wildlife Federation is to educate, inspire and assist individuals and organizations of diverse cultures to conserve wildlife and other natural resources and to protect the Earth's environment in order to achieve a peaceful, equitable and sustainable future.

Protect American River Canyons (PARC) is an Auburn based grassroots educational group dedicated to the preservation of the wilderness, recreational, cultural and historical values of the American River and its Canyons for all to enjoy. PARC sponsors the Confluence Festival, outings and river cleanups.

Restore Hetch Hetchy Organization devoted expressly to removing O'Shaugnessy Dam.

River Network River Network's mission is to help people organize to protect and restore rivers and watersheds.

Sacramento River Preservation Trust

SAVE - Save The Vaal Environment Campaign to prevent SASOL mining the banks of the VAAL river in South Africa

Sierra Club is a non-profit member-supported, public interest organization that promotes conservation of the natural environment by influencing public policy decisions--legislative, administrative, legal, and electoral.

Sierra Nevada Alliance is a regional coalition of grass-roots and other regional orgs working on environmental issues and community-building in the Sierra. Latest newsletter features articles on watershed restoration.

South Yuba River Citizens League (SYRCL) is a community-based educational non-profit organization committed to the protection and preservation of the entire Yuba River watershed.

Southeast Environmental Association is a community stakeholder group in the Cardigan Bay Region that focuses on the marine environment, the bays and estuaries, and the watersheds that flow into them.

Trout Unlimited is a national organization focused on conserving, protecting and restoring North America's coldwater fisheries and their watersheds. 

Tuolumne River Preservation Trust
The Tuolumne River Preservation Trust works to promote the stewardship of the Tuolumne River and its tributaries to promote a healthy watershed.

Upper Sacramento River Exchange was founded after the Cantara Loop Spill killed more than 30 miles of the Upper Sacramento River in 1991.  The organization works to educate local residents about river ecology and the values of the river.

Water Environment Federation is the preeminent organization dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of the global water environment.
